Eloise heard the beep beep of a white cargo van backing up and then she
saw a guy unloading big bags into the neighbor's garage. Later that night she woke up with red and blue lights flashing across her ceiling. She grabbed her orange
bathrobe and Stanley, her pug, and stepped into the hallway. She stood
on the bench clutching Stanley for warmth and comfort and looked through
the stained glass window. There were half a dozen guys, a police swat team swarming around the neighbor's driveway and garage. "I knew it, I knew it," she said, holding Stanley up to her nose. She gave him a kiss and returned to bed. There's no way I'm going to be able to fall back to sleep now, she thought. But she did and when she woke up the next morning there was nearly a foot of snow.
