David Cicilline

Congressman Cicilline is the trifecta for a career in public life: Executive experience as the first openly gay Mayor of a capitol city – Providence; deep legislative experience as a member of Congress for the past 13 years; and now moving into a new role in non-profit leadership as the CEO of the Rhode Island Foundation – the largest and oldest community foundation in the nation and the only one exclusively serving an entire State.

Italian, Jewish, gay, and progressive, Cicilline is a unique leader who doesn’t fit into anyone’s mold. He has been an energetic leader in the fight for equality as co-chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus, a valiant voice for sanity in controlling gun violence, and a strong advocate for equal opportunity for all citizens. He has been a consistently effective voice for the dispossessed and the forgotten people who need and deserve greater opportunity.

Rep. Cicilline will talk about his ascent in Congressional leadership and the factors that went into his recent decision to leave Congress to have a more direct impact on his native State through the profound influence of the Rhode Island Foundation and its millions in annual grants to support the arts, education, access to health care, and a range of other programs that contribute to the richness and vitality of life for all Rhode Islanders. And he will discuss his approach to leadership and what makes a great leader . . . or not.
