Friendship: Truths and Myths

As a shy person I am wary of "friendship" but I know that having a community is crucial for my wellbeing. I thank my daily walks with my dog for bringing me "sidewalk friends". I did not grow up with community at all. My parents never separated business from family life. We were treated as their clients and employees. I watched my parents have terrible friendships. They were always making power moves and competing as if underneath they hated their friends and each other. Inevitably this is exactly what was eventually revealed. The dog-eat dog world of Manhattan advertising they operated in 24/7 was not the world of authenticity sincerity trust and vulnerability that I find to be the necessary climate for friendships marriage love and life.
