Spring snowstorm expected to begin late Sunday afternoon

• Winter hasn't left yet: Six inches of snow expected on Sunday in R.I....

Rhode Island could still see as much as 8 inches of snow on the first official day of spring.

The highest snowfall amounts are expected to be along the south coast of Rhode Island, as well as in far southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod.

The bulk of the snow is expected to fall Sunday night, making travel hazardous. The snowfall amounts may vary depending on the track of the storm, but snow is expected to end mid-morning on Monday.

The snow is expected to be wet and heavy, which could knock down tree limbs and cause power outages.

The National Weather Service says there is some uncertainty as to how far the main snow band will reach. If the storm stays offshore, snows could be in the 1- to 4-inch range. If it extends inland, 6 or more inches are possible.

Sunday will start off partly sunny, with clouds coming in by the afternoon, and highs in the upper 30s. Winds will be from the northeast at 5 to 10 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph. The chance of snow will be 40 percent.

There is a 90 percent chance of snow Sunday night, with accumulation expected, lows in the upper 20s and north winds of 5 to 10 mph.

Light snow is likely to continue Monday morning, with some accumulation possible and highs in the lower 40s.
