orphaned baby antelope

Chester Zoo's orphaned baby antelope 'no bigger than a bottle of pop'

An orphaned baby antelope is being raised by keepers at Chester Zoo after the death of his mother.

Thanos, a Kirk's dik-dik, was born at the beginning of January and only stands 19cm (7.5in) tall.

He does not even register on the zoo's set of antelope scales.

Kirk's dik-diks grow to a maximum size of 40cm (16in), making them one of the smallest antelope species in the world.

They take their name from Sir John Kirk, a 19th Century Scottish naturalist, as well as the sound they make when fleeing from danger.

They are native to northeast Africa.
