The sisters would never even try her food no matter how lavish and delicious. She had been a professional chef for years in three different restaurants. She knew her way around the kitchen more than most. She also knew that accepting another woman's food was a kind of submission which could be too scary. She knew this was unconscious tribal behavior. The men never hesitated to try her food and be outspoken about how much they liked it which only secured the notion that she would never be invited back. She didn't care. This was not her idea of fun. Last summer the sisters invited her for a picnic with her husband but didn't touch a morsel of the home-cooked food she brought. I thought picnics were about sharing, she thought to herself. Then she remembered.
