The week Joyce was moving she left a message for Abby that there was a pile of items on the sidewalk. I can put things aside for you, she said. But they were already on the curb. Abigail knew this about Joyce, that she was a scaredy-cat. She couldn't give eye contact. It was way too intimate. The only way she could give a gift was to drop it at her door and run away. Poor gal. That's what it meant to be raised by alcoholics. You never think you are worthy and you sabotage everything.
