Carol

"Hi Nancy!" I said at the supermarket.

"Carol."

"You've been my neighbor for years. And all this time I thought you were named Nancy. I'm so embarrassed. What are you making?"

"I'm trying to decide. I live alone so I don't cook anymore," she said, "I'll just make a sandwich for dinner. I do go up and cook for my granddaughter in Mendon because she has no time."

"What does she do?"

"She's an HR person at a big company in Boston and has young kids. So I go and cook for her and the kids age 2 and 4. They keep me active, they're a handful. They'll argue and fight with each other at meals."

"I learned to cook in a restaurant so I always cook for a crowd and freeze it. Maybe I should make something you'd like and give you some because I am always cooking too much! What's your favorite food? Maybe I should make it for you! Think about it and let me know."

"Beef Stroganoff," Carol said.

"What's in it? I've never made it."

"How about, I'll make it for you," she said. And we both laughed.

On the way home I said to Bill, "I knew her husband when he was alive. I know her daughter lives next door to her with her husband Scott but I guess they don't eat together."

I looked up the recipe and nearly died of heartburn reading it. Beef, sour cream, egg noodles, mushrooms. But Boeuf Bourguignon cooked with red wine and veggies I would love!
