From Public Talk 6, Saanen, 21 July 1966
Find out why you have pretensions; don’t examine the causes, analyse, dissect, fight or postpone. When you analyse or search for the cause, you are merely avoiding. We know very well why we have these masks, these pretensions, these defences – we don’t have to be told by anyone; we know it. What is important is not to spend a single second on the analysis or the examination of the cause, but to be aware of this resistance, the defences and pretensions. If you are aware, break it. If you don’t want to break it, remain behind it, as you are – don’t introduce another problem. All of us have so many problems as it is, which these masks, these defences have created.
