Ultimately, what I found helpful, necessary, and even rather easy to do was to start to “give my mind a topic to think about.” Basically, I gave my mind an assignment.
It helped me prove to myself that it’s possible to gain control of our thinking. I started by accomplishing it in small, manageable ways. My first attempt was to challenge myself to say my name. And I said, “Debbie,” and proved to myself I just controlled that thought. I also found it helpful to verbalize it to myself: “OK, Deb, think about what you want for dinner.” And I started thinking about dinner only. Like thinking on command. article
