Signs of Life

Yesterday I had a backwards day and after 9 hours at my desk I finally got out for a walk with Lil. There were a group of RIVERZEDGE teens making a rain garden at police Headquarters. "We'll do another one out the front," the group leader said. The kids were packing up for the day clearing stuff off the police headquarters picnic table and feeding peanut butter crackers to Lily. When I turned the corner onto Social Street I spotted a silver VW wagon heading west driving slow. It had a flat tire on the drivers side rear. They slowly pulled into the dumpster driveway of Burger King and got out looking like they just landed from Mars. "Do you have triple A? You can use my phone," I said. "Yes, thanks so much," the girl said. "I've only been driving for two months", she said sporting a birds nest hairdo. Her boyfriend had orange hair and a light blue PUGS not DRUGS T-shirt. His jeans hung low revealing red briefs. Their spare tire had something rusty poking out of it. "We're from Fairhaven MA but we love Woonsocket," she said. She's a photographer for magazines and he's a bass player in a band.
