Last night we walked Lily onto Hazel Street. Happy families have moved into what was an abandoned corner. The kids were playing basketball on the quiet street while their parents were hanging out nearby, leaning on their cars.
"Here's my dog!" the oldest boy said bouncing the basketball between his legs and catching it as he walked.
"How do you do that? I said
He snuggled Lily and her tail wagged.
This is so great I said. How was the first few days of school?" I asked.
Good, we're at the middle school,
Same school?
Yes,
We walk together in the morning.
Excellent. It's great exercise.
Hey, wear bright clothes so the cars see you. Those glow vests that crossing guards wear are only 2 bucks at joblot, I said
I'll get three, for my friends that walk with me.
In the city your friends are in the same apartment building and neighborhood and you can play after school, and during snowstorms. In the suburbs and rural areas you have to beg your parents for a lift. It's hard enough to be a kid, trapped by your parents. At least in the city you can have friends to play with.
