Ten ducklings were reunited with their mother after a group of children alerted authorities that they had fallen into a storm drain Thursday morning in Northborough, police said.
Officers responded to a call reporting that the children saw the ducklings fall into a storm drain while crossing the street with their mother near Assabet Circle at about 10 a.m. When officers arrived they found the ducklings inside the storm drain, with their mother nearby, unable to reach them.
The children and their parents brought bread and duck food for the ducklings, while Northborough Police requested help from the Department of Public Works, police said. A crew arrived with tools to unlock the storm drain cover and climbed down the 12-foot storm drain, which was partially filled with water, to rescue the ducklings.
The children cheered each time a crew member emerged with more ducklings in a plastic box he used to scoop them up, police said.
“The ducklings were then placed in a bucket in a location near the woods, with the hope that their mother would return,” police said.
The ducklings were released about 20 minutes later when their mother returned, and the family was reunited, police said.
Northborough Police Chief Brian Griffin said in a statement that the incident was an outstanding example of community policing.
“I am pleased that the neighborhood kids thought to call us when they witnessed something that upset them,” Griffin said, “and I am proud of our officers and DPW workers for responding with compassion and teamwork to ensure this call had a happy ending. This was a great community effort to reunite a mother duck with her babies.”
