Exercise + Mindfulness

Active exercise during depressed periods can be helpful, as can a mindfulness approach to meditating. Engaging with confidants for personal support, and attending to one’s health in every way, can also move the pendulum away from the dark side. I recommend limited use of a light box for some patients; however, light therapy can trigger hypomania or mania, so it is important to have a family member or close friend involved, as they may spot emerging hypomania or elevated energy states well before you do.
