Why Do People Insist

Why do people insist on keeping their cars and homes UNLOCKED? 

They like the illusion of safety.

 Yet they complain when they find that someone came into their house and drank water and left the glass on the counter when nobody was home. A friend living in Vermont told me this story.

They complain when they find their neighbors in their kitchen eating dinner. The same woman told me this story after telling the neighbors come in help yourself anytime, and they did!

Numbers of others have announced to me that they rarely lock their doors. Crime is not an issue in my neighborhood, they'll say. Or the neighbors would see anyone coming in my house.

But desperate humans are everywhere, I think to myself. Why do that to yourself. Years ago my brother in NYC said he never locked his apartment because he knows everyone in the building. I said but what if the 8 year old living down the hall wanders in and turns on your skill saw? You wouldn't want him to get hurt would you?
