Lunch in Yemen

 by Emily Lisker

I had the pleasure of being invited to the home of four former students - a family from Yemen. I couldn't wait! I've always wanted to share authentic home-made food with my students. I was going to their home, which is only a few blocks from my house, but I knew I would be traveling to the other side of the world.

We ate an amazing meal prepared by my student Sameerh. Lamb; two homemade chutneys, one green (cilantro and garlic) and one red (tomato and herbs); beautiful and delicious saffron rice; and homemade thin floppy bread the size of a manhole cover, which she baked directly on the walls of the hot oven.

We sat in a cozy circle on the rug among pillows and enjoyed one of the best meals I have ever eaten. We gathered the rice and lamb with our fingers. The bread was deliberately torn to scoop up both a ratatouille-like vegetable dish and the chutney. After the meal Sameerh served a sweet black tea that was flavored with orange, cinnamon, cloves, and cardamom. Their neighbor joined us later with her baby.

The food, the company, the whole experience was beautiful. If the whole world could do this we would have world peace, I said.
