"Infinitely Polar Bear" is based on director Maya Forbes' own family story. Ruffalo plays Cam Stuart, who has bipolar disorder. When Cam has a manic breakdown and lands in a mental hospital, his African-American wife, Maggie (Zoe Saldana), and two daughters must move from the country into a small apartment in Cambridge, Mass.
Cam is from a wealthy old New England family, but his relatives refuse to support him, and Maggie can't find a decent job. So she decides to go to New York and get her MBA at Columbia, leaving Cam in charge of their two daughters after he is released from the hospital. The film tells the story of how they managed.
