Navajo or Diné ?
“Navajo” is the name that was given to the tribe by colonizers, in Diné Bizaad (our language) Diné means the people. “Navajo” originates from the Apache tribes, meaning “thieves” and when colonizers first met the Diné they asked the Apache what they were called. It has been reinforced as this through colonial systems. Diné is the preferred term because it is the name that we have given ourselves.
“Navajo Nation”
Only use this term if directly referring to the reservation or its governmental system. Try to use Dinétah, if it is hard to pronunciate you can say “Diné Homelands” or “Diné Nation” to refer to the physical land/space. Navajo Nation is a term used by the government to identify our land, people and leadership. It is not a culturally informed term, it’s best to stay away from it and use traditional words/phrases.
Siihasin (hope) meaning
Pronunciation of siihasin: “see-HA-sin”
A key teaching in the Diné way of life. Siihasin is a pillar of Hózhó (balance) coexisting with Nitsáhákees (Thinking), Nahat’á (Planning) and Iiná (Living). Without these four things, hózhó cannot exist in our universe.
