Learning Curve

I have pressure cooked for 41 years and know never walk away. Now I must learn the same technique with my new instant pot.

I'm making all of the mistakes
with my new pressure cooker so I can be a better instant pot teacher to my friends. I am making steel cut oats and I've stopped my cooker three times.

1. not enough water (burn notice)
2. lid not closed
3. steam escaping.
4. another burn notice

Nonetheless I was here to hear the alert messages and the oats came out great!

Crazy Soup

Tonight I took the leftover garlicky rice and beans and cooked cabbage and added water and miso paste. Then I added chopped cabbage and a quart of vegetable rice carrot cabbage onion puree that I had in the freezer, red wine, Sriracha, chopped smoked kielbasa a friend gave us, olive oil and salt. It was fantastic.

Savory Pizzelle

3 large eggs, at room temperature
1/2 cup salted butter, melted and cooled about 5 minutes
1 cup unbleached, all-purpose flour
1/2 cup finely-grated and lightly-packed Locatelli cheese, or your favorite high-quality Pecorino Romano (Note: The tangy, slightly bold and salty flavor of Pecorino Romano is perfect for these snackers. I always use a microplane grater to get the necessary fine texture.)
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons cracked black pepper
1 teaspoon herbes de Provence (a blend of rosemary, majoram, thyme and savory)
1 1/2 teaspoons onion powder
1 teaspoon sea salt

Polar Pond Plunge

We just walked to the pond with Romeo and our pal Peter was getting ready to plunge into the water. He does this daily all year round. Sometimes he has to cut a hole in the ice to reach the water. It makes me shudder to think of plunging in the cold. He stays in for 60-90 seconds. Brrrrrr. He prepares hot coffee so it's waiting for him when he gets out.

We have Projected

“Rather than accepting that we are the loving beings that He created, we have arrogantly thought that we could create ourselves, and then create God. Because we are angry and judgmental, we have projected those characteristics onto Him. We have made up a God in our image. But God remains who He is and always has been: the energy, the thought of unconditional love.”
― Marianne Williamson

You are the one who is flying the plane

“Always seek less turbulent skies.
Hurt. Fly above it.
Betrayal. Fly above it.
Anger. Fly above it.
You are the one who is flying the plane.”
― Marianne Williamson

Joy

“Joy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognize how good things really are.”
― Marianne Williamson

Surrender

“Something amazing happens when we surrender and just love. We melt into another world, a realm of power already within us. The world changes when we change. the world softens when we soften. The world loves us when we choose to love the world.”
― Marianne Williamson

Someone's Darkness

“Until we have seen someone's darkness, we don't really know who they are. Until we have forgiven someone's darkness, we don't really know what love is.”
― Marianne Williamson

Courage

“It takes courage...to endure the sharp pains of self discovery rather than choose to take the dull pain of unconsciousness that would last the rest of our lives.”
― Marianne Williamson

The Healing

“Each of us has a unique part to play in the healing of the world.”
― Marianne Williamson

Return to Love

Our Deepest Fear

Marianne Williamson
Return to Love

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear in that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our Light, not our Darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the World.
There is nothing enlightening about shrinking
so that other people won’t feel unsure around you.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone.
As we let our own Light shine,
we consciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear,
our presence automatically liberates others."

by Marianne Williamson quoted in Nelson Mandela’s Inaugural Speech, 1994

Desiderata

GO PLACIDLY amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Happy Tuba Skinny New Year

Listen to: Gotta Give Me Some

Yesterday

Yesterday I saw the butterfly. I only see her once or twice a year when she swims at our pool. In the locker room after our swim she told me her father was a commercial fisherman.
"My friend in college, her dad was a commercial fisherman. He'd be gone for weeks," I said.
"When my younger sister was 2 years old she didn't want my father to leave so she hid all of his stuff before the trip. He ended up missing the boat. The boat never came back," she said.
"Oh my god, she saved his life!"
"After that he never took the long trips. He stayed local and became a lobsterman."

Path

Know that you will eventually have to leave everything behind; the writing will demand it of you. Bareboned, you are on the path with no markers, only the skulls of those who never made it back – over and over again.

Imagining

“For three months, a person sits and looks at you, imagining a kiss.”
― Etgar Keret

Hitchhiking

My writing is more like hitchhiking than driving.

“According to Gur's theory of boredom, everything that happens in the world today is because of boredom: love, war, inventions, fake fireplaces - ninety-five percent of all that is pure boredom.”
― Etgar Keret, The Nimrod Flipout

Rush and Throb

Yes, I get dry spells. Sometimes I can't turn out a thing for three months. When one of those spells comes on I quit trying to work and go out and see something of life. You can't write a story that's got any life in it by sitting at a writing table and thinking. You've got to get out into the streets, into the crowds, talk with people, and feel the rush and throb of real life—that's the stimulant for a story writer.
