Get there early!. Get there early, and pray that the screen door is still open, and that they still have spinach pies. Don't bother with the menu - just ask "What's hot?"...or if you are on the late side of things, "What's left?" Chances are someone in front of you in line just asked either of those two questions, so just pay attention and order what they ordered. Unless they got the last one...bastard!
Be prepared to wait a few minutes if things are about to come out of the oven. It is worth it.
A note on spinach pies in Rhode Island: I am always overwhelmed by the sheer amount of canned spinach inside. (Who invented these things, Popeye?) Jeanette's pies are no exception, I believe that some of the old-school Italian doctors will prescribe them to anemics. But if you accept that this is the nature of the genre, here is what sets Jeanette's offerings apart:
* The crust of the pastry - so crunchy, and always golden brown and perfect. (And speaking of crust, the staff at Jeanette's have a certain charming crustiness to them as well).
* The tang of the pepperoni and the bite of the garlic - which like the spinach are both in abundance, and help to make the pie interesting.
* The cheese, all melted and gooey, running throughout - not just tucked over to the side like some spinach pies.
You can't go wrong with any of their other offerings as well (broccoli pies, calzones, etc.), but the spinach pies are the staple.
Just don't get there late - and by that I mean pick up your lunch just after you've eaten your breakfast. Even arriving at noon can be a total fail - this place is tiny, it is popular, and closing time corresponds to the minute they sell their last pie - which some days could be 2pm, and other days could be 11am.
Oh, and did I mention? You really should try to get there early.
