I was assembling my spinach and basil to make a green semolina pasta when I heard a bunch of people shouting. I looked out back and 6 women were banging on the back door of 99 Rathbun screaming and yelling. I phoned the cops.
I watched from the window. These six women were pissed off. They were throwing full plastic water bottles and an orange home depot bucket against the old wooden building and grabbing anything they could get their hands on. The metal entrance door to the building remained locked but a person was poking out of the 2nd floor window taunting them.
Other people in the neighborhood began gathering on stoops and driveways to watch. One person was filming.
5 muscular officers in crew cuts and short sleeves laden with gear belts and under-armor bullet proof vests arrived. One was wearing a black glove and a dark blue helmet and glow green stripe. He was prepared to break up a riot or maybe he's a motorcycle or bicycle cop. The other 4 officers were hat-less and talking to the residents of the two tenements. They were folding their arms, talking into their lapels, pacing and having a psychotherapy style conversation with the residents. They were both authoritative and non threatening at the same time. After about 40 minutes the officers were able to leave and all is quiet for the moment.
Tomorrow is a full moon and I can only imagine there will be more calls. Meanwhile a bouncy house has been erected over here in our parking lot. My green pasta dough is a tough ball that I am trying to knead. I spritzed it a few times and squeezed it while watching the real time neighborhood action. Now it's finally loosening up. I can let it rest for 30 minutes under a tea cloth while I clean up.
I came back and the dough is tough. I had to beat it up and spritz it some more. I'm alternating the spritzing with the kneading this time on a wooden cutting board. I went to the rear window to double check on the neighborhood and three of the officers are back talking to the residents.
They just carted off 3 women including 1 from the 2nd floor. It's going to be a long night.
