The last public execution by guillotine in France took place in Versailles on June 17, 1939. The condemned man, Eugen Weidmann, was executed outside Saint-Pierre Prison, on Rue Georges Clémenceau. The event is notable because the chaotic and enthusiastic crowd reaction led to the end of public executions in France.
