Why Yelling is Harmful

Why Yelling is Harmful with Dogs (and humans)

Why yelling is harmful:

It creates fear: Dogs have sensitive hearing and can become fearful or anxious when yelled at, leading to a breakdown of trust.

It teaches the wrong lesson: Instead of understanding the mistake, they might just associate the yelling with you, not the action, potentially causing them to hide or be afraid of you.

It damages the bond: Repeated yelling erodes the strong, trusting relationship you have.

How to help your dog (or human) forgive you:

Be calm and soothing: Use a soft, gentle voice when you talk to your dog.

Offer physical comfort (carefully): Approach slowly, avoid sudden hugs, and offer gentle ear scratches or petting to show affection.

Use positive reinforcement: Give treats and play with them to create positive associations and show that good things happen with you.

Be patient: Allow your dog to approach you, and let them show signs of forgiveness like relaxed body language or tail wags.

Avoid confusing signals: Don't yell and then immediately cuddle, as this sends mixed messages; be consistent with kindness.
