somebody honked

somebody honked their horn at 1:55 AM
instead of ringing the doorbell
I am awake ahead of the cardinals
Ahead of my committee of sleep
ahead of my dream machine.

Lily and the cat are happy for an early supper
and I am making coffee, careful not to wake my sleeping neighbors
whose windows are 2 feet away from my kitchen sink.
perhaps they will have coffee dreams

Lily went back upstairs to sleep with Bill.
Sammy is still eating.
classical violin music on my radio
outside, sounds of dripping rain.
I hear a cardinal
he's tooting his horn instead of ringing the doorbell.
