Gymnasium on the Titanic
I decided to brave the gymnasium room during rush hour. I was a willing anthropologist. While I stretched and rowed, a few big guys came in and began lifting weights and gasping. Don't hurt yourself, I wanted to say. There were six women silent and methodical, walking and jogging and skiing while plugged into headphones. The college kid I know was bicycling while reading a novel. It's like the gymnasium on the Titanic, I said to my husband as I heated up dinner.
