We are admittedly a nation of toddlers having tantrums. I believe we can return to the dinner table to understand the problem and how it all began.
When I see folks cooking individual dinners for
each of their children I have to wonder about the bigger message. They
are teaching consumer behavior versus modeling a healthy family. They
are afraid their children will abandon them. I've got news for you, THEY
WILL!! They are supposed to build their own autonomous lives.
I once invited a friend for dinner and she handed me a menu with recipes. I was bewildered. She thought I was offering to be her restaurant. She couldn't bear to let go of control. A friends new wife invited for supper showed up with a frozen dinner to adhere to her Jenny Craig or whatchimacallit diet. All of this points to not understanding community. Where do we learn this? At the table. I will even go so far as to say the health crisis we're having right now could've been abated had we learned about community at the table.
