Chatter

When I read Jon Frankel's food writings on his blog The Last Bender, I want to make them into a book to read over and over like I do with Lori Colwin's HOME COKING and MORE HOME COOKING. The writing accompanying the recipes is the most marvelous package.

We are preparing to enjoy a snowy weekend. I can't drink but I can make the most amazing 3 seed sourdough discard crackers adapted and inspired by the seed crackers recipe from Little Spoon Farm. I use sunflower raw seeds broken up in a grinder with  my sourdough added and un-hulled sesame seeds (which taste like bacon when toasted) and poppy seeds. Divine!

Yesterday I used oven cleaner I bought years ago and I had been too terrified to use. Now my oven looks like the day it was born 1960 Thermador in the wall oven. That LYE works. I opened all the windows and ran the fan and wore gloves. I wanted to protect my dog from the fumes too. It was a miracle. Now I am ready to clean out the closets but I must use this "transmit" energy on the page.

In the 1980's my mother painted a brick sealer on the floor of her country house kitchen. She ignored all of the warnings. She bragged about how she had two burly roofers working and they came down from the roof from the fumes. But Sonia, my mother, continued to use the product without any safety precautions. Then she began hallucinating "bloody hands streaming down a wall," and raced off to call Dr. Murray Jonas her psychiatrist in NYC.
