Tricks
I still use tricks even when I know it's a trick. Even after years of swimming. I tell myself just go do one lap, giving
myself a victory. I always feel better. I have a choice. I can leave. I am in charge,
not the expectation. Just one block of walking my dog leads to the mile. But
we always have the option to stop, turn around and go home. The habit gets established but I
still keep the expectations low, one lap, one block. If I get tired, I can nap later. I find that I'm not the same person after a few minutes. Energy arrives and the mood lifts. I surprise myself. And today I'll begin again.
