Lithium’s history extends beyond its psychiatric applications. Until the 1940s, lithium was a key ingredient in the soft drink 7-Up, initially marketed as “Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda,” before its rebranding. The drink promised health benefits like “an abundance of energy, enthusiasm, clear complexion, and shining eyes,” with its new name, “Up,” hinting at the uplifting effects of lithium. The FDA banned the use of lithium in soft drinks and beer in 1948.
