The Orange Juice Incident

This morning I shook a full gallon glass jar of orange juice and it slipped out of my hands and fell to the floor. The glass jar shattered causing orange juice to flood the kitchen. The glass pieces were tiny and traveled far, even into the bathroom. Luckily Bill was there and we both sprang into action.

First we brought Romeo dog into the dining room and used a chair to block the kitchen doorway. He was mellow about it.

We swept up the glass shards with a straw broom and scooped using a dustpan. Then we washed the broom, dustpan and mini hand broom and placed them outside in the sun to dry.

Then we mopped up the juice and glass with two big old towels and placed them in a rubber dishpan. We carried the whole mess outside and carefully draped the wet towels on the far fence near the bushes, where nobody walks.

Then we mopped the floor with a string mop and Murphy's Oil soap and water. We own a galvanized bucket on wheels with a mop wringer from our days in the old mill.

The towels dried by the end of the day and we shook them out in the front shrubs. We washed them alone in the washing machine. The weensy glass particles washed away. We double checked.

Silver lining: nobody got hurt and the floor is now very clean. When it first happened I was having a hard time forgiving myself. I was angry and relentlessly blaming myself so I walked to the YMCA and swam laps and now I feel much better.
