Early

I got out early with Romeo and we did some training in the big empty parking lots downtown. I had chopped up the wiener Nagla gave me yesterday and used it as a reward each time Romeo sat.
Walking on a leash is completely foreign to him. He is frightened by sudden loud noises. But he is getting familiar with the city traffic sounds. I make him sit at every curb and each time I stop. He is learning fast. I have a theory he was hit by a car but survived, just like Honey. Romeo reminds me of Honey a lot. Romeo is like Honey and Ruby combined.

I ran into Roger and we talked about the courage to learn to read as an adult. His co-worker Cathy went to Project Learn and learned to read. She was dyslexic as a child and fell behind. She has been working as a pastry chef for decades. I met her years ago at the bus stop. She sounded like my Brooklyn relatives. Where are you from? I asked. "Staten Island," she said. I knew I recognized the accent I said. Roger told me she has been hiding ever since her mother died. "Please tell her she is amazing!" I said. I have two other local friends who don't know how to read. Maybe they'd be inspired by Cathy to go to Project Learn.
