Once upon a time I had quite a bit of solitude in the Oregon backcountry. Once went 10 days without seeing another person. A great trick I learned was to be mindful & name emotions as they arose.
It was a fun game (when I remembered to play.) Those emotions—like the deer who hung around the homestead, & the lizards, locusts, birds, & bears—became friends to reach out to. Hello, sadness? Hello, fear? How have you been?
Those emotions were guests I welcomed—they were not me. I was the one who noticed, & really I wasn’t even that but part of something larger. A meadow. A forest. A mountain range. A sky.
