Lawn darts also known as "Jarts," were large, metal-tipped projectiles resembling javelins, popular from the 1950s until banned in the U.S. in 1988 due to severe injuries and fatalities, transforming from a bar game to a backyard toy with plastic fins that targeted hoops but became dangerous when thrown incorrectly or used by children, leading to widespread bans and destruction orders.
Lawn darts are large, weighted darts intended to be tossed underhand towards a horizontal ground target. On 19 December 1988, all lawn darts were banned from sale in the United States by the Consumer Product Safety Commission after they were responsible for the deaths of three children since 1970.[38] In 1989, they were also banned in Canada.[39]
