Thinking this morning that a handicap sometimes becomes the ticket for learning incredible things. My sister in law can't eat sugar and she invented a pecan pie that's to die for using rice syrup and barley malt and maple syrup.
My home body tendencies, introversion, stomach aches and budget has caused me to cook and bake all of my food for over many years. I learned to cook and manage my small and unpredictable freelance income. I learned to walk everywhere and use the library instead of paying for TV or phone packages. These are not bad lessons nor are they impoverished ones. I learned to write letters because I was not going to jump on airplanes to visit people. I prefer to stay home and be with my dog and bake and cook and write.
So I feel lucky.
The folks who always have plenty of funds do not necessarily learn about managing resources or discovering them in their backyard. Years ago friend who have spent their long lives traveling the world decided to visit a state park PURGATORY CHASM. Their expectations were so low they actually fulfilled them and never explored beyond the parking lot. It was close to their home and they overlooked it for years. I find this story hilarious.
Now that we have had a week of food holidays I am reminded about how fucked up people are about food. When you make a gift of Anise Pizzelle do not say Oh I like Lemon. If you give dark chocolate Do not say I hate dark chocolate. Be polite and just say thank you. Understand that your pea brained ego is not the point. Giving and connecting is the point. When your husband loves the food I make do not treat me like I just had an affair with him in your bedroom. Perhaps you ought to spend time playing in your kitchen versus taking it out on me.
