'The Ship That Turned Back is a "documemory" film about the acclaimed filmmaker Irving Saraf's dramatic childhood escape as a seven-year-old Jewish boy from Nazi-occupied Poland in 1939. Irving's memories are explored in parallax, through the dual lens of the boy who experienced it and the old man who tells the story to his grandchildren. Childhood recollections merge with family dramatizations, children's illustrations and historical clips in this genre-bending documentary. David Lundstedt
