Julian Hatton on Louis Dodd

Last Saturday Alison and I had the rare pleasure of paying Lois Dodd a visit in her Blairstown, NJ, home and studio. It was a powerful experience. To sum up my impressions, Lois is “pure painter”.

These are some of the striking qualities I sensed while spending the afternoon with Lois:

-             An absence of pretense.
-             An absence of doubt.
-             A sense of comfort in one’s own skin and in the world, including the art world, which is rare.
-             Contentment and subtle joy.
-             Simplicity and pragmaticism; nothing extra just in case, just what you can use now.
-             Books, lots of books, several being read bit by bit.
-             Clarity and relaxed order, no fussiness.
-             Humility and respect, which is sort of embedded in the way things are chosen, taken care of, used, arranged.
-             The reason for painting is clear and the motivation is unencumbered: a fascination with seeing, almost anything, and seeing what it looks like painted, on canvas, or board, or panel, with oil paint. Which also means a fascination with materials – oil paint, colors, mediums.
-             Directness and freshness: the paintings don’t carry the signs of struggle or equivocation. Neither does Lois.

Lois says she chose that house (20 years ago?) for its windows. As anyone can imagine, windows are everything.
