I went running downtown with Lily at 6 AM but the sidewalks were sheer ice. I saw a couple walking and one of them fell flat. Jungy came out of the post office to salt and sand and I saw Steve he was already working the Library. Unsung Heroes of our city start work as early as 3 AM.
Now we have 60 degrees coming today and then tomorrow, a Nor' Easter 10-14 inches of snow. Every Rhode islander runs out to get milk and bread. If I don't go today I'll have to milk my own cow during the storm or use evaporated milk in my coffee.
Last night my husband and I shared a famous mushroom and onions and pepperoncini and pickles sandwich with the wonderful reference Librarians of the Woonsocket Harris Library at Kay's on Cass Ave in the cozy room round table for 8 under the great blue heron made of hemp rope. We discussed the wheels of the world and had a few laughs. These librarians go well above the call of duty to take care of ALL of the citizens of Woonsocket. We are so lucky.
When I walk in Blackstone MA I find the families are very frightened of diversity of the city and its people. I think it is very sad. "That is why they are in the suburbs," my husband says. "They are TERRIFIED." The kids growing up on my street, are street smart and more courageous because they've developed trust in themselves.
Our library is the living room for the city. Kids do homework after school, many elderly read and get warm or cool off, many people have their only chance to use computers.
Don't avert your eyes, it's just poverty.
