We have so many masks. We put them on easily and take them off only in the privacy of our own minds and hearts. And in private life – if one is at all serious or aware – there are also various masks. With friends, we put on a mask, in the intimacy of a family we have another mask, and when we are alone, if we are ever alone, we have a totally different mask. Each mask we have is in contradiction. Most of us are not even aware of these; we just drift, adjusting ourselves to various influences and pressures, acting and reacting according to what the masks dictate. So we live a life of contradiction and conflict, until we die. From Public Talk 6, Saanen, 21 July 1966
