Changing the Headline

This quote reminds me of when I was freelancing for the Boston Globe and making illustrations for Art Director Jim Pavlovich, I was 28 years old in 1988 and TOO SHY to call him back lest I appear stupid. So I would replay the phone message a jillion times to decipher what he was telling me to draw a picture of. Then I'd draw it and wrap it up securely and send it in (via my bicycling to the bus station nearby my studio, in downtown Providence and the Globe would send a taxi to pick it up!! and they'd adapt the title of the article when necessary.

The best thing that can happen is for the theme to be nice and clear from the beginning. Doesn’t always happen. You think you have a theme and you then start telling the story. Pretty soon the characters take over and the story takes over and you realize your theme isn’t being executed by the story, so you start changing the theme.
